Corporate Social Investment Initiatives

FFS sponsored the Tongaat and INK branches of PROTEC which are based in Kwa-Zulu Natal.  Protec is a non-profit organisation that provides extra mathematics and science tuition as well as teaches life skills development to learners who excel from previously disadvantaged communities. 

As part of our sponsorship, FFS also hosted the learners from the INK and Tongaat branches of PROTEC for a career day workshop.  The learners were enthusiastic and felt they had a better understanding of the different career paths to follow in the petroleum and allied sciences industry. 

FFS supports the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists – KZN Central Region.  This year, the Expo took place between 5 and 6 August 2019. More than 400 learners from previously disadvantaged communities participated in the Expo of which more than 51% were black females.

FFS also sponsored 5 special awards and judges’ memorabilia at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientist International Science Fair which was held in September 2019 at the Birchwood Conference Centre, in Gauteng.   

FFS has recognised the importance of encouraging learners to read, especially at a grassroots level, therefore, the association with READ, an organisation that facilitates the training of primary school educators and the supply of learning materials to rural disadvantaged schools. 

FFS together with READ has developed a maths and science initiative in previously disadvantaged communities in urban and peri-urban areas as well as an early childhood crèche development program with a focus on areas where employees reside and/or in previously disadvantaged communities in which the company operates in.   

FFS through the Domino Foundation sponsors a nutrition program and limited school uniforms for learners who attend Rossburgh High School, Seaview Primary and Phambili High School. The sponsorship also includes a feeding scheme program in areas such as Umlazi, Malagazi, Umgababa, Mzinyathi and Amaoti. The intention is to expand the project to include our other branches. 

The Company sponsored a Trulife production at Seaview Primary.  The topics presented were bullying for the grade sixes and peer pressure for the grade sevens. The programme is in line with the Department of Education’s Life Orientation syllabus. 

We continued with its partnership with the Wildtrust in sponsoring a project that educates and assists with the growing of indigenous trees on a large scale basis.

FFS has entered into a partnership with the Syafunda Foundation that will implement a learning & data management platform by providing access to localized digital content for Mathematics, Science, Entrepreneurship, Financial literacy and digital skills through mobile technology. The best teaching practices are integrated on video, audio and e-books into the school’s system through a wireless digital library for high school learners which are in alignment with the Department of Education’s curriculum.

FFS sponsored prizes towards the Durban University of Technology’s Department of Chemical Engineering’s annual merit awards for the top students studying towards a National Diploma in Chemical Engineering, a Bachelor of Technology and Masters in Engineering which has since become an annual sponsorship.

As part of the Company’s initiative to expand learners’ interest in science, FFS sponsored mobile science kits to 6 schools in previously disadvantaged communities in the Mpumalanga area.

Skills Development and Training

FFS is committed to providing enhanced career opportunities for employees within the company.

Black employees with the necessary skills and acumen have been identified and earmarked to be assisted in realising their full potential; thereby not only improving their own quality of life but guaranteeing improved productivity within the company.  

FFS have various skills training programmes including artisan initiative training, learner-ships and experiential training programmes in place.  In this regard, FFS sponsored 100 learners who are studying towards a technical or artisan type course at the Gert Sibande FET College in Mpumalanga.  

FFS has implemented Engineers in Training and Technicians in Training programs aimed specifically at individuals in these disciplines from previously disadvantaged communities.

The Company supports disabled learners with artisan training such as welding and boiler-making.

FFS also assists a number of students through the Vhukoni Incentive Programme which provides learners from previously disadvantaged communities with access to tertiary education to study towards a career in the petroleum and allied sciences industry through bursaries that cover tuition and accommodation. 

Procurement

In terms of FFS’ procurement policy, suppliers are required to provide updated B-BBEE verification certificates and confirmation that they are Empowering Suppliers as defined in the amended B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice on an annual basis. 

To assist with the verification process, we have affidavits for completion by EME’s and QSE’s which are more than 51% black-owned.  

Supplier and Enterprise Development

SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE 

FFS is involved in two Supplier Development initiatives:

  • eAfrica Carriers, a transport company which operates within the petroleum sector. They are a 100% Black-owned Qualifying Small Enterprise with a Level 1 BBBEE status.  The specific objective is to accelerate the development, sustainability and ultimate financial and operational independence of eAfrica Carriers; and
  • DNF Waste and Environmental Services CC, an Exempted Micro Enterprise, is a 100% black woman-owned company based in East London.  The close corporation wants to expand its existing waste stream collections to include used lubricating oils.  

The funds generated from the used oil collections will be used to assist an old age home in the area in which the closed corporation operates. 

The close corporation has an existing site and a used lubricating oil bulking tank is in the process of being commissioned at the site. Furthermore, the close corporation was provided with a collection vehicle with a capacity of 1000 litres.  

ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES 

FFS has implemented the following initiatives as part of its Enterprise Development Program:

Zandi’s Recycling: an Exempted Micro Enterprise, is a 100% black woman-owned company based in Boksburg which is currently involved with the collection of used lubricating oils.  The funds received from the oil collection are used to supplement the funding requirements for Zandi’s Angels, an orphanage.   

FFS is providing Zandi’s Recycling with the following assistance for the collection of used lubricating oils:-

  • Equipment in terms of a collection vehicle with a 1000 litre capacity and a bulking tank;
  • Operational assistance;
  • Financial assistance, when and if required;
  • Technical and marketing assistance.  

Tevin and Bongani Trading: a 100% black-owned Exempted Micro Enterprise based in Mpumalanga which is currently involved with the collection of used lubricating oils.  FFS has provided Tevin and Bongani Trading with the following assistance for the collection of used lubricating oils:

  • Equipment in terms of a collection vehicle with a 1000litre capacity and a bulking tank;
  • Operational assistance;
  • Financial assistance, when and if required; and
  • Technical and marketing assistance.  

Olena Investments (Pty) Ltd: a 100% black youth-owned Exempted Micro Enterprise, based in Mpumalanga which is currently involved with the collection of used lubricating oils.  FFS has provided Olena Investments (Pty) Ltd with the following assistance for the collection of used lubricating oils:

  • Equipment in terms of a collection vehicle with a 1000litre capacity and a bulking tank;
  • Operational assistance;
  • Financial assistance, when and if required; and
  • Technical and marketing assistance.  

Hoeseshoe Enterprise: a 100% black-owned Exempted Micro Enterprise, based in Mpumalanga which is currently involved with the collection of used lubricating oils.  FFS has provided Hoeseshoe Enterprise with the following assistance for the collection of used lubricating oils:

  • Equipment in terms of a collection vehicle with a 1000 litre capacity and a bulking tank;
  • Operational assistance;
  • Financial assistance, when and if required; and
  • Technical and marketing assistance.  

Mikarth Group: a 100% black-owned Exempted Micro Enterprise, based in Mpumalanga which is currently involved with the collection of used lubricating oils.  FFS has provided the Mikarth Group with the following assistance for the collection of used lubricating oils:

  • Equipment in terms of a collection vehicle with a 1000 litre capacity and a bulking tank;
  • Operational assistance;
  • Financial assistance, when and if required; and
  • Technical and marketing assistance.  

Ditiro Tsake (Pty) Ltd: a 100% black youth-owned Exempted Micro Enterprise, based in Mpumalanga which is currently involved with the collection of used lubricating oils.  FFS has provided Ditiro Tsake (Pty) Ltd with the following assistance for the collection of used lubricating oils:

  • Equipment in terms of a collection vehicle with a 1000 litre capacity and a bulking tank;
  • Operational assistance;
  • Financial assistance, when and if required; and
  • Technical and marketing assistance.

Marangani Trading and Projects: a 100% black women-owned Exempted Micro Enterprise, based in Mpumalanga which is currently involved with the collection of used lubricating oils.  FFS has provided Marangani Trading and Projects with the following assistance for the collection of used lubricating oils:

  • Equipment in terms of a collection vehicle with a 1000 litre capacity and a bulking tank;
  • Operational assistance;
  • Financial assistance, when and if required; and
  • Technical and marketing assistance.  

Merebulk Carriers: a transport company which operates within the petroleum sector. They are a 100% Black-owned EME with a Level 1 B-BBEE status.  The specific objective is to accelerate the development, sustainability and ultimate financial and operational independence of Merebulk Carriers.
