Corporate Social Investment

FFS accepts that as a member of the greater South African community it has a responsibility to assist in a meaningful way in trying to improve the lives of disadvantaged individuals and communities beyond that of a tax-paying entity. To this end, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSI) policy has been drawn up and adopted. This policy is in accordance with the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act 53 of 2003 and provides for a significant amount of money to be directed at charity work.

FFS Refiners’ CSI initiative has been directed mainly at educational activities that work towards improving the educational standards of disadvantaged communities. The major beneficiaries are:

  • The READ Foundation which enables rural schools in underprivileged areas to benefit from receiving critical reading and learning materials and in educator training programs to improve the standard of instruction.
  • FFS also supports PROTEC who provide additional mathematics and science lessons on Saturdays to promising learners from township schools.
  • Expo for Young Scientists: FFS sponsors this extremely valuable initiative that aims at fostering an interest in science amongst our school learners. The object is to encourage learners to investigate, experiment, analyse, hypothesise and conclude on a wide range of topics including personal interests or hobbies. The process of scientific investigation is often seen as the catalyst from which a passion for a career in the sciences is developed. Stimulation which may lead to a tertiary education in one of the pure sciences or in engineering. Not only can this lead to a very rewarding and meaningful career but will contribute to the betterment of our society as a whole. The Expo is run by a dedicated group of science educators, from schools and tertiary institutions, who have developed the programme into a world-class event where over 650 projects, from almost 1000 learners, are presented and judged over two days. Judging of the projects is carried out by a volunteer group of more than 100 professionals from institutions, Government and companies in and around Durban. Each participant receives a certificate of participation and a large number of awards and prizes are presented.
  • Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment: FFS subscribes to the need to promote economic empowerment of previously disadvantaged people.

Whistle Blowers is an independent third-party organisation where complaints of wrong doing can be anonymously reported. These logged incidents are then brought to the attention of FFS Senior Management, who are then obligated to investigate and report back.
